REPORT ILLEGAL STONECUTTING
PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT
With
construction season upon us, it's important for all of us to keep contractors
and garden companies in compliance with City of Chicago environmental
regulations.
It is ILLEGAL to cut stone without a wet blade. If
you see stone or brick dust blowing or billowing from a saw, that means
workers are not following city law. Remind the foreman, then call the
city's
Department of the Environment, 312-744-7672. (Put this
number in your cell phone.) The Dept. of the Environment will want to
know the building site address and the name of the company doing the
work. (You can also call that company and describe the illegal situation
you're witnessing.) If a property owner is present, make a point to explain
or remind that person of the city's environmental laws. (Most homeowners
are unaware.)
If
the illegal cutting continues, call the City of Chicago non-emergency
number 3-1-1. Chicago has the highest incidence of
asthma in the nation. It is vital to keep stone and brick dust out
of the air.
